Bohada Mask
Handcrafted Masks bringing Mythology to Life
A Living Heritage: The Art of Bohada Mask-Making
The Bohada mask is the heart and soul of the Bohada festival, a vibrant tribal celebration in Maharashtra. These masks are not simply decorative; they are sacred objects that embody a profound connection to mythology, spirituality, and community identity. Crafted from materials like paper pulp, clay, and natural adhesives, each mask is meticulously created by skilled artisans, a tradition passed down through generations. Once made of heavy wood, the masks are now typically made from lighter papier-mâché, making it easier for performers to dance and enact stories throughout the all-night processions. Each of the 52 traditional “Sohang” masks represents a specific mythological character—from gods and goddesses to demons and animals—and is often owned and maintained by a single family, serving as a cherished heirloom. The act of wearing the mask transforms the individual into a living representation of the deity or character, bringing ancient tales to life and preserving a rich cultural heritage that is at risk of disappearing.
